The Steps Explained: Eyeshadow Application Tutorial for Everyday Eyes
If you prefer to read the steps to watching videos or simply want additional instructions to perfect your eyeshadow, read the steps below:
- Prime your eyelids with an eyeshadow primer, concealer or foundation.
- Apply a light eyeshadow to the lid. Apply the colour across the lower lid from the lash line, and stop at the crease. When applying, don’t go above the natural crease of the eye.
- Apply a dark eye shadow to the Outer V-area. To create contour, use the tip of your brush to pick some eyeshadow. Then, start by applying it at the outer corner of the eye just above the top lashes, into the outer V-area of your eye (that is the area towards your ear). Then, use a clean brush to blend out that colour you just applied in order to soften the harsh edges of the eyeshadow – blend in a circular motion. Hint: Matte eyeshadow is better (than shimmery colours) to use on the outer-V corner of the eyes.
- Apply dark eye shadow to your crease. Apply the dark eye colour as a transition colour into your crease, just above that colour you just applied. Then sweep it along the eyelid where the brow bone hits the crease, moving the brush in a half-moon from the outer corner of the eye inward toward the centre of the eyelid. (Don’t darken the innermost part of the eyelid.) Sweep the brush back and forth several times to blend. To intensify colour, repeat with more shadow.
- Apply the highlight to make the eye pop, and make you look bright. Tap on a light shimmery colour at the arch of your brow/ under your brow bone. sweeping upward toward the brow (without going as high as the brow). Also, apply this colour to your tear duct/ inner V-area – this is the area beside your nose.
- Repeat above steps 1 through 5 on the other eye Follow the same steps for the other eye, remembering to tap off excess shadow each time you dip your brush.
- Apply eyeliner to the top and lower lash lines
- Finish off the eye makeup with false lashes (optional) and/or mascara.
(LIST) Things You’ll Need to Do Your Eyeshadow Correctly
Here is everything you need to do your eyeshadow:
- Eyeshadow primer
- Eyeshadows – a light colour eye shadow and a dark colour eye shadow (preferably a 4-shade eyeshadow palette or a 2-shade eyeshadow palette). Popular brands of eyeshadow in Nigeria include Mary Kay, MAC eyeshadow, Urban Decay naked eyeshadow palette, NYX, Maybelline eyeshadow, Juvia’s Place, BMPro, LA Girl and more.
- Eyeshadow brush: An eyeshadow brush (You can use your index finger to apply colour if you don’t have a makeup brush). – use is to apply eyeshadow over the lid. You can also use the tip of the brush to apply eyeshadow under the lower lash line or to create a very defined line in the crease of the eye. The best use for the Eye Shader brush is for packing colour onto the eyelid.
- A Blending brush: A clean brush for blending the colours.
- Eyeliner
- Mascara
- Ten Minutes of your time

Common Eyeshadow Mistakes to Avoid
Here are two common eyeshadow mistakes and simple makeup tricks to help you avoid them:
- Make only one item a focus: Between your lips, eyes, and blusher, make only one item a focus – not both. For example, if you want to wear smoky eyes or heavy eyeshadow, consider wearing light or neural colour lipstick and pale blusher on your cheeks. That way, your eyes will be the main focus. Hope you get the gist?
- Blend well: Putting on too much and heavy eyeshadow colour will make you look like a mini masquerade. Instead, apply a bit and then blend, blend, blend. Blending is the key to getting your eyeshadow right. Only apply eyeshadow below the crease of your eyelid, and blend the colours outwards to spread the colours into space between your eyelid and brows.
*The above 2 tips alone are the secret of pro makeup artists, and following them can make even a cheap eyeshadow look expensive on your face. Read on for more expert tips.

Eyeshadow Expert Tips and Application Techniques
Some women have the most expensive eyeshadow but after applying them, they look cheap – simply because they don’t know the expert techniques that pro makeup artists use. Now, you too can get it…
- What to use: The right way to pick colour from an eyeshadow pot/ palette is to use your index finger or run your brush over the colour and then tap off any excess eyeshadow or blow off the excess (with your mouth) before putting on colour to your eyes. If you don’t, you will look dramatic, because the colour will be too much and harsh on your eyes). Never pack eyeshadow directly to your eyes without doing that.
- The right way to apply colour to your eye is to press/ pad on eyeshadow. Don’t brush or rub eyeshadow to your eyes. The correct way is to just dab/ press the colour onto the eye. Some makeup artists would say that you should just pack on the colours at first. That’s okay – Don’t worry if it’s too much at first, because later you will blend the harsh lines to make the eyeshadow look close to natural – see the first video above for how to blend eyeshadow colours.
