How We Met (True Love Story by the Bride)
On the 19th of Nov 2015, I was in an examination hall preparing to write my first paper of the day (ICAN skills level). A colleague whom I attended ICAN lectures with, came to say ‘hi’ to me where I was seated, while he and his friends were trying to locate their seats. [*ICAN = Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria].
We exchanged greetings and I smiled at him as he made jest (of me) before they continued searching for their seats.
Apparently, David (now my hubby) was one of my colleague’s friends who was also trying to locate his own seat. He saw me while I was exchanging greetings with his friend but I didn’t notice him at all.
Dave’s seat was directly opposite mine all through the three days of our exams, as he was a level ahead of me. All through the 3 days of the examination, I still didn’t notice him, as I didn’t even know him.
He had been watching me during this period and even told his other friends that he liked me and was going to speak with me on the last day of exams. As boys would always be, they encouraged him.
But he still didn’t approach me at that time.
Meanwhile, during the exams, I had been moving around with my girlfriend who he (David) also knows. He didn’t say anything to her.
On the night of the final day of the exams, while trying to rest my head of the exam stress, my phone rang.
Voila! It was a gentleman asking about my exams and all. I was surprised since I didn’t know who was speaking to me, but this person knew that I just finished an exam.
Fortunately, I decided to be patient and listened as he introduced himself. The next thing he said was that he wanted to see me the next day. Of course, I declined because I didn’t know him. I told him that I was in school, and said the name of my school. Lol.
So, I declined his request to see me, and he didn’t argue.
At noon, the next day, I got a phone call from this gentleman, saying that he was almost at my school. He asked where he could meet me. Gosh! I didn’t think he would come over and at this time, I couldn’t be rude.
In hindsight, If I suspected he would come to my school, I would have made plans to go to class or go see my supervisor so that he wouldn’t see me, and I wouldn’t feel guilty (*evil smiles*).
So, I told him where to meet me. I can still remember that spot o. I met a dark, charming guy there. In my mind, I said: “who’s this black dude?”.
He introduced himself and the first thing I asked him was if there was no ‘ulterior’ motive to his visit (lol, plenty ulterior motive pa). We chatted for a while and I showed him around my school (before he left back to Ibadan where he worked).
That was where we started from. We became friends for months.
As time passed, he made his intentions known. We dated for a few months and broke up at least 2 or 3 times during the year 2016 (men, it was a rough year for us, ‘cos he is my first. I couldn’t make up my mind quickly).
Fast forward to 2017: finally, we both agreed to settle in the relationship. We had become best friends and bonded so much by this time.
We’ve been through a lot but he has been the sweetest thing that ever happened to me.
