Types of Wedding Gown Necklines and How to Choose (w/ Photos of Neckline Styles)

A wedding gown neckline style changes the entire shape of a dress and how it looks on you.  Generally, necklines enhance the beauty of an outfit and makes it stand out.  Let two different women try wearing two different gowns with exactly the same design but different necklines, and you would find that one dress looks better on each person – just because of the neckline styles.  As a bride, you must look perfect in all angles of your gown – perfect neckline, perfect sleeves and so on.  Therefore, choosing the right wedding dress neckline is a big part of finding the perfect dress.   In this post, I’ll help you figure out the best wedding gown neckline for your body shape.

How to Choose the Right Wedding Gown Neckline for Your Body Shape

Different necklines makes a dress look differently on a woman, and not every neckline will look good on everyone.  Bridal gown designers are known to make similar dresses with varying necklines. For example: some neckline styles will make your neck appear longer (than they are), some will draw attention to your bustline (making your breasts look bigger), and some necklines will make wide shoulders prominent.  Therefore the right dress neckline will help you look better in every part of your body.  Below are the 12 different types of necklines – read to choose yours.

1. Sweetheart Neckline Wedding Gowns

Bridal gowns with sweetheart neck have a neckline that dips into the shape of the top part of heart-shape.  Because this neckline is low and the heart shape part curves tightly around the bust, wearing a sweetheart wedding dress will make your bust area and neckline (decolletage and cleavage) appear more noticeable, drawing attention and eyes to those areas.  Sweetheart neckline wedding gowns come every style of sleeves – strapless, spaghetti sleeves, short, long sleeves etc.

Suitable for: The sweetheart neck wedding dress is suitable for women with busty (but not-very-busty) women who desire to appear as fuller busts.  This neckline comes in diverse sleeves styles (strap, strapless, sleeves and sleeveless), is common with ball gown and mermaid gown silhouettes, and a favourite of Nigerian brides.  Most Nigerian brides prefer to add a touch of modesty to their sweetheart neckline, by having the top part of the bodice covered with illusion lace (details about Illusion lace down below).  One famous sweetheart neckline is Beyonce’s wedding dress when she married Jay-Z in 2008.

2. T-Shirt Neckline (aka Jewel Neck) Wedding Dresses

A T-shirt neckline wedding dress features a high/ top-round neck that looks resembles the neck of a crew neck T-shirt (rounded shape, high neck).  This type of round neckline sits at the bottom of the throat.

Suitable for: A wedding gown with T-shirt neckline makes one appear more busty than they actually are.  Therefore, this style of neckline is suitable for women with small or moderate sized busts.  If you’re busty or have wide shoulders, this wedding dress neckline may not work for you (it will make you look puffy).

3. Scoop Neck or Round Neckline

A dress with scoop neckline has a low-round neck that is cut to the shape of letter “U’ or a semi-circle, or simply a wide-round neck.  A scoop neck wedding gown has a rounded neckline that dips down below the neck, to show part of the chest-skin.  The T-shirt neckline and the scoop neck are similar in cut but the difference is that the scoop neckline is cut lower and deeper (sometimes, a wider round cut) than the T-shirt neck. In this type of neckline, the scoop cut deepens down towards the chest, while the T-shirt neck stops at the bottom of the throat.
