What Does Onion Colour look like?
You must have heard people say ‘onion purple’, ‘onion pink’ and ‘onion red’ when shopping for wedding aso-ebi fabrics. Onion Colour actually resembles the colour of onion skin (purplish-red, light pink or pinkish-purple). Nigerians are known to use the colour of food or anything they are familiar with to describe or name a colour; hence the different Onion colour names.
Onion colour is a fun and interesting shade of purple but with a tinge of red or pink, making it a lot more fun to style. What’s Your Best Onion Colour Combo?
There you have it – our big list of onion colour combinations for Nigerian wedding, or for any kind of dressing. Onion colour is a favourite among Nigerian wedding celebrants and guests. Now you know the many colours to pair with Onion Colour to make your outfit more interesting.
By the way, does it amuse you how Nigerians coin a colour name? From Cockroach-brown, Omo blue, Fayrouz green, carton brown, onion pink, onion purple… I tend to think that that way of naming colours is creative and makes it easy for everyone, even grandmas, to relate when there’s an aso-ebi fabric to buy.
Who wants to memorize an Oyibo colour name or get confused about what the colour is, when we can name it after whatever around us it resembles? The best part is that Nigerians are not even bothered about printing our Naija coded dress colour names on invitation cards. So cool how onion pink and onion purple colour got its name.

Thank you for everything, please am kind of confused here, my wedding comes up in 3 months time, combining of colours is the problem I have. my colours are Wine, champagne gold and white but my husband to be own is black and royal blue I haven’t gotten any for the parents please how can I combine all this
Hi Isioma, thanks for the feedback.
Searching for colours is one of the biggest headaches of Nigerian brides. You’re not alone.
So, you already have your own colour combination and that of your groom.
For the parents, go for a colour combo that works with your wedding day colour scheme, or ask groom and bride’s mother to suggest 2-3 colours so that you pick from there. Let them know you will pick and tell them the final colours.
TIPS:
-Parents don’t like very bright or very dark colours
-Keep it simple and pick one main colour (which is in your colour scheme) as the parents’ colours – and it would be easier to find colours that go with that colour, to make a combo for them.
-Involve the moms: ask them to suggest what colour combinations they would like to wear. get them to suggest 2 or 3, and get back to them with your final choice. You also want them to feel good (and involved) in what they wear, but make it tie to your theme by making the final decision. Even if you do not pick any of their colour suggestions, at least you will get an idea of a starting colour to look for combos.
That’s my thought.
good day ma,
i came across your page today i must commend you are doing a great job
my wedding is coming up i only have rose gold in mind the challenge is i dont know what other colours i can combine with and also how to combine the colours your idea will be well appreciated.
thanks a bunch.
Hi Folashade, welcome to NaijaGlamWedding blog, and thanks for the feedback.
Here are some colours that go with rose-gold:
-Turquoise
-Navy Blue, Ice Blue
-Army Green, Dark Green, Leaf Green
-Gold
-Silver
-Burgundy
-Black
Those are the rose-gold colour combos I could think of.
Finally, colour combinations are best picked by seeing/ looking at photos to find out what your appeal to your senses. Rose-Gold colour combos that appeal to bride A will be different from those that appeal to bride B. Therefore, I recommend that you patiently check out couple’s wedding outfits and aso-ebi dresses photos around those colours to see the ones that your eyes would love.

Hello Eyitayo, I’m glad you found my blog helpful. Thanks for leaving a comment and question.
I understand your dilemma. You’re not alone. Getting stuck when picking colours for the different guest groups is a common headache that Nigerian brides face.
You did well by already figuring out what you want in terms of colours. That helps to keep every other non-wanted colour out of the way and defines the colour scheme you desire.
So, here are my thoughts (feel free to use or ignore them, or tweak them to your taste):
1) Colour ideas for your husband’s family:
They could pair their desired ARMY GREEN with one of your colours of interest so that you get something you like and they also get something they want. Everybody wins. Some army green colour combo ideas could be:
Army green outfit + orange headgear
Army green outfit + coral headgear
Army green outfit + off-white headgear
Army green outfit + champagne headgear
Army green outfit + white or off-white
Army green outfit + silver
2) The Parents – Colour Combo Ideas (different from the general public)
The Mummies: Mint green wrapper + hot pink blouse and gele
The Daddies: Monochrome mint green outfit Or Mint agbada and sokoto + off-white buba
Mustard yellow monochrome combo
Mustard yellow with a touch of gold
Yellow and white
Yellow and silver
Yellow and royal blue gele/ cap
Yellow and Purple/ Lavender
3) General Public – Colour Combo Ideas:
orange or coral + silver gele
orange or coral + grey gele
orange or coral + champagne gold gele
Coral or peach + Turquoise
Navy blue + burnt orange
4) Asoebi Guys amd Girls – Colour Combo Ideas:
orange or coral and army green: main army green + a touch of orange/ coral as gele/ ipele).
Lavender outfit + coral gele
Lavender outfit + gold gele/ cap
Monochrome mint green
**Lavender is an onion-like colour. Scroll up for the images on my Onion colour combos, for more ideas of how those aso-ebi gals combined the colours.
Those are my thoughts. Hope that helps, and I wish you a fun-filled wedding!
Send us photos after the wedding, if you’d like to be featured.

Thank you for the onion color combo please my wedding is coming up how can I combine these three colors onion purple, deep magenta and champagne gold for my trad (what color will my hubby wear) and also for family and friends. Thanks
Hello Omowumi, here are some ideas:
-Groom – Deep magenta agbada outfit + fila (cap)
-Friends and family – Onion purple OR a light shade of onion purple.
-Deep magenta and a touch of champagne gold ??? – bride, groom
-Deep magenta outfit with some champagne gold patterns/designs + champagne gele
-Deep magenta dress (with a touch of champagne) with champagne gold gele.
Thanks for your input in making weddings beautiful and memorable. I follow your blog avidly😍. Pls, I need a way out a maze of colors. My wedding comes up in April and getting colors has been a headache. I’ll appreciate your suggestion. I’m dark complexioned so
Couple: champagne gold/rose gold monochrome.
Parents: teal blue monochrome(but they said it’s too dark)
Friends/relatives: ???
Pls, what color can the parents combine with that will become the aso ebi for friends..
Any rearrangement is welcome, pls
Aww! Thanks for your feedback, Olutayo. That’s the sweetest comment we’ve received here this new year.
I feel you – picking colour combos for the different guest groups is one of the biggest dilemmas of brides when planning a Nigerian wedding. So, you’re not alone.
Here’s my reply, as per your colour combination questions:
>For the Parents: I agree, most parents will perceive Teal as dark. You sure want them to feel good in whatever colour of dress they’ll wear on your big day, right? I feel you should give them 2 or 3 more colour suggestions to pick from. From their reaction to you, they want ‘something light/ brighter’.
*A win-win for you and them would be to pick a colour in-between what they want and what you wanted. Here’s an idea… Since you initially picked a BLUE SHADE, so maybe look at brighter shades of blue or greenish-blue such as turquoise, sky blue, ‘omo’ blue, bottle green, apple green and lilac, kelly green, aqua blue. Any of those in monochrome combo or paired with a nice matching gele colour.
>For Friends and Relatives: Why not bring your love of Teal here. Some ideas: teal aso-ebi dress with pink headtie/ gele, or monochrome (if you like); teal aso-ebi dress with pink or peach headtie/ gele.
