By the way, does it amuse you how Nigerians coin a colour name? From Cockroach-brown, Omo blue, Fayrouz green, carton brown, onion pink, onion purple… I tend to think that it’s creative and makes it easy for everyone, even grandmas, to relate when there’s an aso-ebi fabric to buy.
Who wants to cram an Oyibo colour name or get confused about what the colour is, when we can name it after whatever around us it resembles? The best part is that Nigerians are not even bothered about printing our Naija coded dress colour names on invitation cards. So cool how onion pink and onion purple colour got its name.

Thanks for your input in making weddings beautiful and memorable. I follow your blog avidly😍. Pls, I need a way out a maze of colors. My wedding comes up in April and getting colors has been a headache. I’ll appreciate your suggestion. I’m dark complexioned so
Couple: champagne gold/rose gold monochrome.
Parents: teal blue monochrome(but they said it’s too dark)
Friends/relatives: ???
Pls, what color can the parents combine with that will become the aso ebi for friends..
Any rearrangement is welcome, pls
Aww! Thanks for your feedback, Olutayo. That’s the sweetest comment we’ve received here this new year.
I feel you – picking colour combos for the different guest groups is one of the biggest dilemmas of brides when planning a Nigerian wedding. So, you’re not alone.
Here’s my reply, as per your colour combination questions:
>For the Parents: I agree, most parents will perceive Teal as dark. You sure want them to feel good in whatever colour of dress they’ll wear on your big day, right? I feel you should give them 2 or 3 more colour suggestions to pick from. From their reaction to you, they want ‘something light/ brighter’.
*A win-win for you and them would be to pick a colour in-between what they want and what you wanted. Here’s an idea… Since you initially picked a BLUE SHADE, so maybe look at brighter shades of blue or greenish-blue such as turquoise, sky blue, ‘omo’ blue, bottle green, apple green and lilac, kelly green, aqua blue. Any of those in monochrome combo or paired with a nice matching gele colour.
>For Friends and Relatives: Why not bring your love of Teal here. Some ideas: teal aso-ebi dress with pink headtie/ gele, or monochrome (if you like); teal aso-ebi dress with pink or peach headtie/ gele.
