We’re tired of seeing wedding group-pictures where the colour of bridesmaids’ dresses are clashing with the groomsmen and groom’s attire colours. How about uncoordinated BMs hairstyles? Not cool.
Read this post to find out what to do to say bye-bye to every form of uncoordinated bridesmaids’look – whether in the form of hairstyles, dress colours/ fabrics or accessories.
When planning what your bridesmaids and chief bridesmaid will wear, what their hairstyle and fashion accessories should be, there are a few things to consider. Swipe or scroll down for the full tips.

If you choose right, the outfit colours should look in-sync in pictures with your groomsmen and bridesmaid together. To help you plan a picture-perfect, no-color-riot bridal party outfit, here are some tips to guide you:
1. Choose a Bridesmaid Dress Colour that Goes With the Groomsmen Attire
Don’t plan your bridesmaids or groomsmen fashion in isolation; ensure their outfits and accessories are from the same colour scheme. Matching your bridesmaids’ dresses to your groomsmen attire does not mean going ‘matchy-matchy’, same-same colour.
I’m talking about choosing a colour that combines well with the boys’ attire. The keyword here is that there must be ‘no colour riot’ when all your bridesmaids and groomsmen are standing together.
Imagine them all in a group picture, ask yourself whether all the different colours are in harmony, in-sync and not blinding the eyes.
One way to pick the right bridesmaids’ dress colour is to find something in your groomsmen’s attire and use that as the basis of colour for your bridesmaids’ outfits. Examples are:
- Match your groomsmen’s neckties with your bridesmaids’ dress colours.
- You may also want to further complement their socks and/ or pocket-square with the bridesmaids’ dresses.
Another way is to choose a colour that complements or goes well with the groomsmen’s attire. Ask yourself if all the colours will blend when your bridesmaids and groomsmen stand side by side in group photos.
You’ll want to think of it the way you think of finding a matching colour combination for your gele and aso-oke combo or for lace blouse and george wrappers combo.
Any way you choose to base your bridesmaids’ dress colour, you can be sure that the colour coordination for the bridal party fashion looks good in pictures.
Just don’t forget to make your chief bridesmaid’s dress colour look in-sync and in-harmony (and not clash) with the colours of the other bridesmaids and groomsmen.
2. Choose Same or Similar Hairstyle for All Bridesmaids
Do not overlook your bridesmaids’ hair and makeup, as those two are what will tie the looks together. Your bridesmaids’ hairstyles and makeup will either give them a polished look or an average look.
Make out time to look at pictures of bridesmaids from other people’s weddings for inspiration. Not having a hairstyle planned out will make your ‘maids look uncoordinated, especially in group photos.
All your ‘maids do not necessarily have to have the exact same hairstyle. Sometimes, a similar (but not the same) hairstyle will look better. Consider each girl’s facial features when thinking of a suitable hairstyle.
Be flexible when choosing your bridesmaids’ hairstyles. Try not to impose a style on them. Involve them in hairstyle discussions and ask for their feedback or suggestions to ensure that you pick the best hairstyle suitable for each bridesmaid.
You may want them to all wear an updo but different styles or the style. Another way is to choose a down-do for them and allow each person to choose the specific style they are comfortable with.
Sometimes, a coordinated hairstyle can look good on every bridesmaid, but know that these days, mismatch bridesmaids hairstyle is a trend. Besides, some hairstyles look good on some women and don’t look good on everyone.

3. Be Intentional in Choosing Your Bridesmaids Accessories (flower bouquet, belt, necklace, shoes, hairpiece)
You also need to think about the type and colour of accessories that will match the style of the bridesmaid dress you pick. Some brides allow their girls to freestyle and wear accessories they previously own or ones gifted to them by the bride herself.
Some brides choose to ask their bridesmaids to wear specific new shoes in a specific colour. How you choose to do it is all up to you, as there is no wrong or right way.
What is important is that you put a thought to their fashion details, such as your bridesmaids’ shoe colour, hairpiece and any other accessories you desire them to wear (such as belt, necklace). You can find plenty of bridesmaids’ accessories ideas in that video above.
4. They Don’t All Have to Wear Matching Bridesmaid’s Dresses
Gone are the days when the only style of bridesmaids fashion was the matching look. The ‘mismatched bridesmaids dress style‘ is also an option for the modern bride and looks amazing when done right. I mentioned that just so you know where the bridesmaid fashion trend is at.
For decades, the trend has been for all bridesmaids to wear matching dress colour and style. That has changed, with brides choosing to have each bridesmaid or their chief bridesmaid wear a different style or colour of the dress.
Here in Nigeria, more brides are choosing to have only their chief bridesmaid stand out from the rest of the other ‘maids, with a non-matching dress.
Where everyone (bride, groom, bridesmaids, and groomsmen) is wearing different outfits, it is important that all the outfits look ‘together’ and not harsh to the eyes in pictures they all appear together. No colour riot, please – we are tired of that.
A great way to choose the best colour combination for members of your bridal party is to choose a colour scheme or palette after you have chosen your main wedding colour.
Your colour palette should have not more than 3 complimentary shades within, from which you pick colours for your bridesmaids and chief bridesmaids dress, as well as your groomsmen neck-tie colour.
That’s a better way than guessing what colours will match, later to see they don’t in your wedding pictures. We have seen even fashion-savvy brides make that kind of mistake only to realise it when they see the group wedding pictures. It shall not be your portion!
5. See Other People’s Wedding Pictures for Inspiration on Bridesmaids Dress Styles
Look at magazines and the internet for the latest bridesmaid dresses and what’s trending in the Nigerian wedding industry as per bridal party colours and fabrics. It’s easy to pick a style from seeing what was worn at recent Nigerian weddings.
Finally, don’t impose the dress you like on your bridesmaids – ensure to involve them in choosing; ask for their feedback and make it a win-win of what you like (and they also like).

6. Don’t Be Afraid to Be Different
Finally, feel free to be different when choosing what your bridesmaids should wear. If you feel strongly about picking dresses that are not conventional bridesmaid dresses, by all means, go for it.
However, be sure that all your ‘maids feel okay about it, and not that you’re forcing the styles on them. Who knows, your being different and experimenting may just kick off a new style of bridesmaid fashion in Nigeria.
Finally, If you feel like having your girls wear an uncommon bridesmaid dress fabric or style. We have seen short bridesmaids dresses, sequin bridesmaids dresses and even non-western bridesmaid dresses using ankara print or tie-and-dye adire fabrics – and most of them were beautiful.
Just ensure that there will be no colour riot. If you pick the outfit shades within your wedding colour scheme, you can be sure that in pictures of your entourage together, all the colours will look seamlessly together and beautiful.
